On the german Spreeblog appeared a very good compilation of what moved the society back then, but I have to adjust this list to fit my personal feelings about my “early” Techno.

Richie Hawtin hat mir erst beibringen müssen was Minimal bedeutet. Laut Vanessa einer der nervigsten Tracks, die sich in meiner Sammlung befinden. Ein Zeichen dafür, dass er in diese Liste gehört.
Richie Hawtin tought me the meaning of minimal and if you believe Vanessa, this is one of the most annoying tracks in my collection. A clear sign that it belongs here in this list.

Was passiert wenn man zuviel Zeit übrig hat und der geplante Zug erst in 2 Stunden auftaucht? Richtig! Man geht shoppen. Dieses mal mit dem Ergebnis das ich mir eine viel zu teure aber echt schöne neue Tasche für die Arbeit gekauft habe. Ich verbringe einfach zu viel Zeit mit Vanessa und ihr Taschen-Tick scheint langsam auf mich abgefärbt zu haben. Dafür brauch ich jetzt aber auch nicht mehr mit irgendeiner Tasche von irgendeiner Konferenz (Zuletzt von den TechDays in Basel) im Zug zu sitzen und alle Welt sieht somit nicht mehr sofort (abgesehen von meiner grauenhaften Frisur), dass ich in der IT arbeite.

What happens when you have 2 hours left until the planed train arrives? Correct! You go straight to the middle of Zürich to do some shopping. This time with the result, that I bought a great looking new bag for far too much money. I think I spent to much time with Vanessa and her addiction to hand-bags. Therefore I no longer need to sit in the train with some old giveaway bag from some conference (Lately from the TechDays in Basel) thus people no longer see on glance (except my horrid haircut), that I work in the IT.

Es wurde Zeit endlich einmal meine Whiskysammlung richtig in Szene zu setzen. Wir waren schon lange auf der Suche nach einer schönen Glasvitrine, haben bisher nur nie eine gefunden, die auch bezahlbar gewesen wäre. Am letzten Wochenende sind wir dann bei IKEA (man höre und staune!) endlich fündig geworden.

Eigentlich waren wir nur auf der Suche nach ein paar Regalbrettern, aber wie das Leben nunmal so ist, kommt man bei IKEA niemals nur mit dem Zeug im Einkaufwagen raus, welches man eigentlich kaufen wollte. So auch diesesmal. Und ~50kg in Glas sind verdammt schwer! Mein armer Micra ist richtig in die Knie gegangen.

Zuhause ging es dann ans aufbauen. Das war mal wieder typisch IKEA: Ein Teil des Metalrahmens war ein wenig krum und erst nach massivem Einsatz von Dremel und ein paar Tropfen Blut hat die Vitrine auch gerade gestanden.

Das Ergebnis kann sich jedoch sehen lassen

The time has come to present my whiskey collection the right way. We were looking for a good looking and affordable glas showcase a long time, but never found the right one. Until last weekend - you won’t believe it - in IKEA.

Actually we were just looking for some glas shelfs, but as allways with IKEA: You’ll never just buy what you were looking for. You’ll allways end up with tons of stuff you didn’t expected to buy. This time with a ~50kg glas showcase, which drove my Micra to its knees.

Back at home I started nailing together my new showcase. Typical IKEA item: One part of the metal frame was not what you call straight and needed lots of help from a Dremel to get so.

But the result looks quite good if you ask me

So lange sind Vanessa und ich jetzt schon zusammen. Geht auf keine Kuhhaut, gell?

Zur Feier des Tages (13.11.) sind wir dann nach Basel gefahren und haben uns die Blue Man Group im Musical Theater angeschaut. Eigentlich war es mein Geburtstagsgeschenk, was wir jetzt endlich mal in die Tat umsetzen konnten, aber das tut mal nix zur Sache.

Die Blue Man Group ist einfach nur genial! Die Jungs machen einfach eine wahnsinnig gute Show. Man hat viel zu Lachen (wenn sie einen mit Wackelpudding bewerfen), das Publikum wird zum Teil mit auf die Bühne genommen, die Kerle laufen quer durchs Publikum und machen ihr Show direkt neben dir weiter, die Musik, die sie auf ihren PVC-Rohren machen klingt einfach genial und rockt wie Sau und überhaupt kommt man teilweise aus dem Lachen nicht mehr raus.

Jeder, der die Möglichkeit besitzt sich die Show einmal anzuschauen (noch bis Januar in Basel und ansonsten eigentlich immer in Berlin) MUSS die Chance einfach nutzen!

Das war so ein toller Abend, dass ich jetzt sogar einen Satz schreiben muss, den man recht selten in dem Blog eines Techis findet: Schatz, ich liebe dich!

12 years are Vanessa and I a couple now. That’s unbelievable long, right?

To celebrate our anniversary we went to the Musical Theater Basel where the Blue Man Group is making their show until January 09. Actually it was my birthday present, but we had to wait for them to come to Basel in order to see them.

The Blue Man Group makes a faboulus show. You’ll laugh your ass off, when they pelt you with wobble pudding, people from the audience will be pulled on stage to perform with them, the 3 blue guys come down to your chair and continue their show right next to you, the music they make on those PVC tubes just rocks and you will have the time of your life.

So if you have the possibility to see them, you simply HAVE to see them!

The evening was so great, that I have to use a sentence you won’t see very often in a techi’s blog: Honey, I love you!

Ich hab mir heute morgen ein neues Gadget gegönnt. Ein Windows Mobile 6.1 Smartphone: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Knall neu (erst seit wenigen Tagen auf dem schweizer Markt erhältlich) und ein richtiges Schmuckstück. Ein ausführlicher Testbericht der Features wird sicherlich die nächsten Tage folgen. Im moment beschränke ich mich nur auf Fotos des Geräts.

Today morning I picked up my new gadget. The brand new (just a few days on market) Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 running Windows Mobile 6.1. Sleek device. A detailed testreport will follow soon. This posting is just for your first optical impression of the device.

Wie man auf den ersten zwei Bildern sieht hat das Handy ein ausklappbare QWERTZ Tastatur. Fühlt sich sehr edel an, da das Gehäuse und auch die Tasten aus Metal gefertig sind. Leider fehlt dem Handy ein Beschleunigungs/Lagesensor und die Umschaltung zwischen Hochkant- und Queransicht erfolgt nur über das ausklappen der Tastatur. Das Display ist absolut brilliant und mit 800*480 Pixeln hat es sogar eine höhere Auflösung als das iPhone. Bilder und Filme sind absolut klar und deutlich.

As you can see on the first two pictures, this mobile has a slider QWERTZ keyboard. The whole device feels very noble as it is made nearly entirely out of metal (even the keyboard itself). It misses a G-sensor, so the switching between portal and landscape view is only possible by sliding out the keyboard. However the display is brilliant and with 800*480 pixels it has even more resolution to offer than the iPhone. Pictures and movies are a joy to watch.

Es ist nicht wirklich ein kleines und leichtes Handy (hier im Vergleich zu meinem Zune der ersten Generation). Mit 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm und 145 Gramm ist es schon recht gross und schwer, aber für ein Display dieser Grösse und eine volle QWERTZ Tastatur nehme ich das gerne in Kauf.

It’s not what you would call small and light (On the pictures you can see it in direct comparison to my first generation Zune). With a size of 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm and a weight of 145 grams it is indeed large and heavy, but for a display like that and a full QWERTZ keyboard it’s not too much.

Hier sieht man die neue X Panel Oberfläche von Sony Ericsson, die Windows Mobile ein bisschen näher an das iPhone und Samsung heranbringen soll. Von der Bedienung her sehr gut, manchmal ein bisschen langsam, aber vor allem eine Erfindung von Sony und somit ist es fraglich wieviele Freizeit Entwickler (ausser mir *gg*) dafür entsprechende Panels schreiben werden.

Here you can see the new X Panel UI that Sony Ericsson developed for the XPERIA. It’s goal is to bring Windows Mobile a little bit nearer to the iPhone and Samsung UI. The handling is very good but sometimes a little bit laggy, but worst part is, that it is a invention of Sony and therefore not a Windows Mobile standard. Time will show how many develeopers (beside myself *gg*) will offer custom Panels.

Erste Tests der Tastatur haben gezeigt, dass man sehr schnell sehr gut mit ihr zurecht kommt. Im Gegensatz zu den ganzen auf dem Markt erhältlichen Touchscreen-Only Geräten hat man hier wenigstens eine Rückmeldung von den Fingerkuppen auf welcher Taste man sich gerade befindet.

My first tests with the keyboard have shown that you very quickly get used to it and you are soon able to write quite quickly with thumbs. I prefer a real keyboard with keys for all the current touchscreen only devices. With a real keyboard you get feedback from your fingertipps over which key you are at least.

Ein Feature will ich noch kurz ansprechen: Den Touch-Focus.
Man berüht im Kameramodus einfach den Bereich auf dem Bildschirm, den man gerne als Focus hätte. Wenn man zum Beispiel eine Person vor einem weit entfernten Gegenstand (zB dem Matterhorn) fotografieren will kann man dafür sorgen, dass die Person scharf wird indem man auf die draufklickt. Umgekehrt kann man auch das Matterhorn anklicken und dieses wird scharf und die Person im Vordergrund wird unscharf.

At last I want to give you a quick introduction of the Touch-Focus feature.
In camera mode you can mark the region to use for the autofocus with your fingertipps. When your are taking a picture of a person in front of - lets say - the Golden Gate Bridge, you can easly change the focus between the bridge and the person by clicking on the object to want to be clear.

Wir sind ja kürzlich mit unserem Team in den 3. Stock umgezogen. Langsam aber sicher sind wir fertig mit der Einrichtung und es fängt auch schon wieder an richtig gemütlich zu werden hier. Es ist also an der Zeit nochmal ein paar Fotos von meinem Arbeitsplatz zu zeigen. (Man beachte vor allem das schöne “The Stig” Poster *gg*)

My workplace on 3rd floor

A few weeks ago our team moved down to the 3rd floor. It took some time to rebuild our dev environment and to make our coffee maschine working again but now it starts to feel like home. The time has come to show some pictures. (Note “The Stig” right next to me *gg*)

Jawohl! Der Winter ist angekommen! Heute morgen gabs nach dem Aufstehen erst mal einen Blick auf einer wunderschöne ca. 3 - 5 cm dicke Schneedecke. War sogar richtiges Chaos auf den Strassen und Schienen, weil wohl noch niemand damit gerechnet hat so früh im Jahr. Auch hier fahren nämlich alle - bis auf uns - auf Sommerreifen rum

2 weeks ago I’ve been on the Microsoft Mediaroom Developers Conference in Toronto. It has been a fabulous conference! Lots of input, lots of new ideas, lots of new features for the Mediaroom client and lots of interessting people to talk to.

But I won’t tell any details here
